Iron clad beetle

This is an iron clad beetle. [Phloeodes pustulosis] They are a common ground-dwelling beetle in southern california. Although they have wings there wing covers are fused together so they cannot fly. they feed on and can be found around decaying wood. contrary to popular belief they are not really clad in iron!
